Prevention
Did you know that 50% of blindness is preventable? Conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic Retinopathy, and macular degeneration are responsible for 51% of blindness. Ignorance, neglect, and lack of professional eye care contribute to the remaining 49%. With early diagnosis, glaucoma may be treated successfully by medication. Advanced cataract surgery now ensures greater success in the restoration of sight. Protective eyewear can prevent 90% of accidental eye injuries. Cases of congenital and hereditary blindness can be reduced through genetic counseling and proper prenatal care.

The purpose of NCSS's Prevention of Blindness Program is to promote public awareness of prevention measures, an understanding of potentially blinding conditions and diseases, and the importance of good eye health.
Adult Screenings
Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in adults over the age of 35. NCSS conducts Adult Eye Health Screenings for high intraocular pressure readings, which could indicate glaucoma. When required, extensive follow-up and referral services are provided.

Preschool Eye Health Screenings
One in 20 preschoolers has a vision problem. Amblyopia, or lazy eye, is a condition that may result in vision loss if left untreated. Children should have an eye examination shortly after birth, again at six months of age, and sometime during the preschool years.
